Inspired

by JT Long
We are halfway through Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009 and I am truly inspired by the outstanding speakers and attendees who have shared the energy and creativity that will take us into a bright future.

Starting with the dedication to giving back through mentoring shown by Monday's speakers Tom Kandris, Bert Gervais and Rob Nicholson, I knew this week was going to be different. Bobby Jackson even stopped by to talk about the importance of philanthropy in his life and business. These people were serious about inspiring start up business owners. Rules for the mentor-mentoree relationship included valuing the mentor's time, reporting back results and never exchanging money for advice.

Tuesday was just as inspiring and practical. Although the speakers - Chris Schuring, Ingrid Rosten and Phil Tretheway - represented green business interests, they were clear that start up alternative companies need to both make good business sense and be sustainable. The good news was that a lot of resources, including grants, are available to environmentally-friendly Sacramento start-ups who are focused and solve a problem.

On Wednesday night, the women - Sharon Gerber, Griselda Barajas, Patricia Hudak and Kathy McKim - inspired a room full of executives with their stories of overcoming adversity, bad employees and a tendency to say "yes" too often to create successful businesses and lives.

In addition to the wonderful speakers, the networking that followed each panel discussion allowed me to learn more about the entrepreneurs creating the next generation of industry in our community.

So call me inspired. I can't wait to see what the rest of the week brings. Will I see you there?

Patricia Hudak of RealWorld101.org is B-A-D A-S-S

by Sac GEW

We picked up Patricia from the airport today for tonight's "I'm Woman Event."  She is one of the nation's top young entrepreneurs and, at 25, has already leveraged her relationships and experience to grow her business.  Like, the fact she was in a room with Seth Godin yesterday and is in Keith Ferazzi's book.

She is totally Bad Ass.  And that's why she's here tonight, for one night only.

We've been sitting here in the office prepping for our event and the nuggets of wisdom popping out of her mouth are so valuable, I feel honored to be in the same room with her.

Here's just one of the nuggets:

Google it: someone, somewhere, has had a similar problem and has probably posted it.  Type in your question and I'm sure you'll find the answer!

And now that we've got all of our prep work done, we're hanging out sharing crazy You Tube videos having a great time before we go set-up at Sacramento City Hall.  Seriously, smart entrepreneurs that are willing to connect on an authentic level are in this room tonight.

We know you all are spoiled for choice here in Sacramento to be inspired during Global Entrepreneurship Week.  Really, you need to be at this one.  Your business will increase 10 fold.

Job Front: Sacramento hosts events for entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs of the world, unite.

Today begins Global Entrepreneurship Week, the worldwide initiative led by the Kansas City-based Kauffman Foundation that brings together business owners, innovators, civic leaders and others to cultivate the next wave of entrepreneurial talent.

In Sacramento, the week dubbed SacGEW kicks off today at Arco Arena with a 7:30 a.m. mentoring session featuring local and national business experts. It's a chance to throw a spotlight on a burgeoning Sacramento business scene.

"Sacramento is a place that has fertile ground for entrepreneurial seeds," said Ricardo Robles, co-founder of Capsity Offices and Sacramento regional coordinator for Global Entrepreneurship Week.

"The goal is to inspire, connect and engage people and show them that they can be entrepreneurs at any age," Robles said. "There's a lot of talent here in Sacramento. It's just a matter of getting them into the right room."

Events will be held through Friday at venues across the area, including Arco Arena, Sacramento and West Sacramento city halls, the Citizen Hotel and the Verge Gallery. They will focus on mentoring and networking, developing green businesses, women entrepreneurs and other topics.

Local business leaders are among the panelists, including Sacramento restaurateur and small business advocate Griselda Barajas-Keolani; Tom Kandris, chief executive officer of manufacturing firm American River Packaging; and Ingrid Rosten, executive director of CleanStart, the Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance's clean energy initiative.

"There are lots of people in Sacramento who are incredibly entrepreneurial, who are taking accountability for their own risk and are making things go," said Jessica Chapman of Sacramento professional organizer Room to Breathe and an event co-organizer. "These are the unsung heroes of our regional economy."

Know your tribe...

by Sac GEW

Seth Godin writes, "The problem with "everyone" is that in order to reach everyone or teach everyone or sell to everyone, you need to so water down what you've got you end up with almost nothing."

Our Sacramento Global Entrepreneurship Week at SacGEW.com "tribe" is full of "Bad Ass" Entrepreneurs who:

  • make things happen out of thin air;
  • know that in order to move forward, you've got to put some skin in the game, even if it is only $25;
  • make decisions and move forward with faith and confidence;
  • know learning is growth;
  • are ready to go to the next level, no matter what level they are at right now.

There is something for everyone out there and so we collaborate and refer to other groups to make sure you get what you need.

Here's the full article from Seth Godin: http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2009/11/everyone-is-clueless.html
